The Expression Number
The next Core Number in Numerology is the Expression or Destiny Number, which is calculated from the sum total of the digits in your full birth name. The Expression Number describes our character and the potential of our life — the substance of our life’s goal which is a lifelong project. The Expression Number calls us to reach as high as we can with the gifts we are given. With the idea of potential in mind, the Expression can also be seen as the Soul’s Evolution — encompassing and pointing to lessons and victories from “past” lives. The Life Path Number describes the path we are on — the Expression Number helps us understand the individual making the journey.
Calculating The Expression Number
Each letter of your name is given a number that matches its place in the alphabet. See chart below:
To calculate the Expression Number:
1. Write out the full name and put the appropriate number from the above chart below each letter.
2. Add the numbers of each name separately and reduce to a single digit: add the first name numbers and reduce to a single digit, add the middle name numbers and reduce to a single digit, and add the last name numbers and reduce to a single digit. If in this process one of the names adds up to Master Number 11, 22, or 33 — DO NOT reduce to a single digit.
3. Now add all the numbers from each name together and reduce this sum to a single digit unless the sum is Master Number 11, 22, or 33 — if the final sum is a Master Number DO NOT reduce to a single digit. If the final sum is a Karmic Debt Number — 13, 14, 16, or 19 — write the number next to the reduced number: for example — write 13/4.
Let us again have Frank Sinatra help us understand Numerology. Here is how Frank’s Expression Number adds up:
First Name = F + R + A + N + C + I + S = 6 + 9 + 1 + 5 + 3 + 9 + 1 = 34 = 7
Middle Name = A + L + B + E + R + T = 1 + 3 + 2 + 5 + 9 + 2 = 22 = 22
Last Name = S + I + N + A + T + R + A = 1 + 9 + 5 + 1 + 2 + 9 + 1 = 28 = 1
Frank’s Expression Number = 7 + 22 + 1 = 30/3 Here we have Frank’s Expression Number of 3. You may remember that Frank’s birthday number is also 3 (12 = 1+2 = 3) — this is very fortunate as it signals a harmony of talent and potential.
